Grampians Peaks Trail. Halls Gap, Victoria. 14th January – 16th January 2018. 36 kms.

14th January 2018. Halls Gap – Bugiga Hikers Camp. 9 kms.
Leo and I drove down from Canberra to Halls Gap on Friday, 12th January, and we spent the Saturday putting out our water caches (and some treats) as there is no drinking water at the campsites. Kirsty, Kjirsten, Michelle and Jonas arrived on Saturday afternoon and we spent the night at Smiths Mill campground to the north of Halls Gap. Sunday was a beautiful day and we packed up early and drove back to Halls Gap. We only had 9 kms to walk but the total ascent was 840 m. The track starts near the Stony Creek and it was a short walk along a paved path to the Venus Baths. That’s where we started climbing up through the rocky gullies to the Grand Canyon and on to the Pinnacle Lookout after making our way through some tight squeezes with our packs on. The views were certainly spectacular. Then it was a truly lovely stroll along the ridgelines to the Sundial Lookout. From there it was a short hike through forests to the Bugiga Hikers camp. We retrieved our cache and spent the afternoon with a few vino tintos.

15th January 2018. Bugiga Hikers camp – Borough Hut campground. 14 kms.
After a surprisingly cool night, we re stashed our water containers and rubbish and headed off through the Messmate forest. We carefully following the track markers through a maze of sandstone to the bridge over the Gate of the East Wind and on to the summit of Mount Rosea. Then it was a long descent to the Boroughs Hut campground. There is vehicle access to the camp and I was a bit taken back by the number of people there.

16th January 2018. Borough Hut campground – Halls Gap. 14 kms.
This turned out to be our hardest day. Even though it was only 14 kms, we continually ascended and descended as the Bellfield track circled Lake Bellfield and eventually back to Halls Gap. There were, however, spectacular views of the Wonderland Range and it was interesting looking up at it where we had walked the previous two days.
