Day 1. Flinders Chase Visitors Centre – Platypus Waterholes – Rocky River Cascades – Snake Lagoon. 12 kms. 32°C. We arrived at the visitors centre and managed to do our induction session on Sunday afternoon which worked out well as, after a very interesting evening at the Rocky River campground with a variety of visitors, we started out at 7am to try and beat the heat. The trail meanders through eucalypti woodland to Platypus Waterholes but not one was to be seen so we headed to the Rocky River and followed it through Mallee forests to Cup Gum Campground. It was starting to get very hot so we were happy to reach it by noon. The trail is very well signposted and easy to follow.

KIWT Walk Day 1 – Rocky River to Snake Lagoon via Platypus Waterholes.
As it was a hot week, we left camp at around 7am every morning except the last day as it was a short walk.
The first section was a dual path that anyone can walk. It was a great introduction as it had many interpretive signs about the area, the devastation of the 2007 bush fires and how the flora and fauna recovered. It also covered mega fauna that used to roam this land. Think 3 metre high kangaroos!
We didn’t see the elusive platypus and it seems not many have. Apparently they can go into hibernation in the summer!
Rocky River was pure clean water and only looks brown because of the tannins from leaf matter breaking down in the water.
Camp was at Cup Gum campground which was great. At one point we heard noises so went to investigate only to find Peter from the local resort coming to pick up the only other 2 hikers doing the walk. They opted to get picked up and dropped off every day… soft!!!
