Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail – Day 2

KIWT Walk Day 2 – Snake Lagoon to Cape du Couedic (Kylie Beer)

Another early start to beat the heat. We were really looking forward to this day as it was all coastal with a section of beach walking. As always, the reality ended up being hot sun and no breeze plus quite soft sand in places which made it harder. It was, however, absolutely beautiful.

When you come up from the river, you get your first glimpses of the mighty Southern Ocean. Antarctica straight ahead! The water looked so inviting.

In some sections the sea mist was quite thick and gave it a magical feeling. Up high on the cliffs, I had a lesson on how to identify rips as there were plenty down there. The trick would be to identify them when at sea level. It’s easy up high!

During our morning tea break we sat up on the cliff by a cairn and watched the waves roll in. Rainbows were seen in the spray on the waves. I tried to capture them but couldn’t get them as much as I’d hoped. Also during this time a small pod of dolphins swam by 🐬

Tonight’s campsite was at the Hakea campground. I enjoyed another night with the fly off the tent, only to awake in the morning to drips landing on my face. A sea mist rolled in during the night and everything got quite damp. Lucky for the hot weather as it all dried out really quick at the next camp!

Day 2. Snake Lagoon – Maupertuis Beach – Cape du Couedic. 14 kms. 38°C. We got away early again @ 7am and followed the Rocky River down to its mouth and the Southern Ocean which we could hear from Cup Gum Camp. It was magnificent. Great rolling breakers, one after another. We had a lovely stroll along the beach before climbing back up to the clifftop and followed it to the high point of the walk. (~150 m.) with awesome views out in to Maupertuis Bay and the Southern Ocean. We reached Hakea Camp just on noon again and spent the afternoon relaxing out of the heat as much as possible.
